Indoor Blinds and Shutters – Choosing Colours and Fabrics

Indoor Blinds Colours

When building, buying or renovating your home, you have many decisions to make which can be fun but sometimes stressful. One decision you will make is what colour or fabric you should choose for your indoor blinds and shutters. Many of our customers know what style of blind they need, such as venetian blinds, roller blinds, roman blinds, timber or aluminum shutters, but they can be overwhelmed whether to pick neutral colours and fabrics, or go for a bold colour to make a statement.

At Davidson’s Blinds and Shutters we have more than twenty years experience helping customers choose the right blind and shutter colour and fabric and we would like to share some of our knowledge with you to make your decision easier.

  1. Research
Before choosing your blind and shutter fabric or colour, we suggest you do lots of research. Visit our Wendouree store to chat to our friendly staff and look at colour samples that you can take home. Also look at your friends’ homes to see what you like, or Google lots of images to see what you think would match your decor. There are lots of great websites displaying a range of colours and styles, such as Houzz ,  or Pinterest has lots of great photos.

  2. Your Personal Style
Do you change the decor in your home often? Or do you prefer to keep things the same for many years?
How you answer this question may effect the colour and fabric choice you decide to make. Many of our customers who choose neutral blind and shutter colours such as cream, white and beige, do because they love changing around their wall colours, furniture, rugs and cushions regularly. If you have neutral blinds and shutters, then it can be easier to compliment the room by adding colourful furniture or accessories.Although if you decide to choose a vibrant and bold blind or shutter colour, then you may choose more neutral tones when selecting your decor, to compliment your bright colours and not make your home look too busy.
  3. Your Home Style
In Ballarat and the surrounding towns, we are fortunate to have a lot of heritage and period homes. If you own one of these beautiful homes, then you may decide you would like to match blinds and shutter colours and fabrics with the original architectural design and style of windows. You may also add lace curtains and period style accessories such as tassels and woven cords to compliment your blind and shutter choice. If you own a newer contemporary homes, then you may prefer neutral colours for more of a classic elegant look. Although if you own a house by the ocean, you may like to decorate your home with pastel blind and shutter colours, or brighter blues and yellows in order to add a fun coastal beachy feel. Our roller blinds and roman blinds are available in more than 30 colours including Victorian colours through to Art Deco, to more contemporary colour styles. We also have timber venetian shutters available in light, medium and dark timber stains, or aluminum shutter styles available in over 40 colours.
  4. Colour and Fabric Choice
Depending on the room you are wanting to decorate, you may decide to make a statement and select a bold colour or pattern as a room feature, or to just add fun and vibrancy. If you choose a dark colour then rooms can look a little smaller, whereas white and lighter colours can soften the room but make the room look bigger.Geometrical shapes and stripes are becoming more popular, but we recommend that if you choose patterned window furnishings, then choosing more simpler furniture and accessory colours will compliment your room.

We hope we have helped make your decision a lot easier. If you require more information about blinds and shutters then please call us on 5333 3066, or come and see us at our store at 617-619 Howitt St Wendouree.

Cleaning Your Blinds and Shutters

Cleaning Blinds

No matter how clean we keep our homes or office, our blinds and shutters can still get dusty and dirty from dust particles in the air, bugs and insects, or from grubby hands. Many of our Davidson’s blind fabrics are treated with a fabric protector to repel mould, dust and mildew, but all blinds and shutters still require cleaning and maintenance to keep them looking as good as new.

Some people think it can take a lot of time and effort to clean and maintain your blinds, but if you use our following cleaning tips, we hope this task will be a lot easier for you.

Cleaning Roller Blinds and Venetian Blinds

  1. Pull the blinds all the way down.
  2. Lightly dust them starting from the top of the blind to the bottom. You can use a specialised microfibre blind duster or a microfibre cloth (available from hardware stores), or a feather duster. Some people ask if you can use a vacuum cleaner. This can be done only if you have the soft brush attachment and ideally is better done with the blinds taken down and lying flat on the floor. You have to be extremely careful using a vacuum cleaner as the strong suction can create creases in your blind fabric.
  3. For more stubborn stains we suggest spot cleaning using warm water and a soft clean white cloth. Instead of wetting the blind, it is better to wet the cloth then gently wipe over the blind.
  4. Make sure your roller blinds and venetian blinds are completely dry before pulling them up.

Cleaning Timber/Plantation Shutters

  1. Turn slats so they are curved away from you.
  2. Dust lightly with a clean soft cloth, feather duster or microfibre cloth. You can also dust them by wearing a clean cotton white glove. Clean slats by starting at the top and wipe back and forth over and under the slats.
  3. Timber shutters can also be cleaned by using a soft vacuum cleaner brush, but be very careful not to press too hard as this can break the slats.
  4. Never use water on timber shutters. Water can warp, stain and discolour your timber shutters.

Cleaning PVC/Aluminum Blinds

  1. Turn slats so they are curved away from you.
  2. Dust them using a microfibre cloth, feather duster or the handy white cotton glove as mentioned above.
  3. If very dirty and dusty, you can use a soft cloth with warm water to wipe the slats, or remove the blind and soak in a bathtub of warm water for one hour.
  4. Please make sure your blinds are completely dry before hanging back up or opening them. Dry them by hanging them outside to dry, or dry them by hand with a soft dry cloth.

By cleaning your blinds on a regular basis will not only keep them looking beautiful, but will also help reduce the amount of dust in your home, which can also benefit allergy and asthma sufferers. A quick weekly dust and then a full clean at least every 2 months is ideal, but blinds and shutters in bathrooms and kitchens may need more regular cleaning due to oils and hairspray use etc.

If you are unsure about your blind fabric and would like further cleaning advice, please call our team of experts on 5333 3066, we are always here to help!
