Awnings for your home, what types are there?
Now that we are experiencing warmer weather, it’s a great time to think about how you can cool your home to reduce your energy bills. Outdoor blinds are a wonderful way to keep out the sun’s harsh rays, while also expanding your outdoor area, providing excellent shade and privacy and also protecting your home and furnishings from fading in the sun.
Our customers are so fortunate to have a wide range of beautiful outdoor blinds to choose from and one of our most popular styles are outdoor awnings. Our range of awnings not only add value to your home, but they allow your outdoor area to be used all year round and keep you, your family and friends nice and comfortable.
With so much choice it’s hard to know which awning to choose based on your budget and style, so let us explain about awnings in further detail.
What are Outdoor Awnings?
An outdoor awning is a roof-like shelter installed on a home’s exterior that shades windows and your home from the sun’s heat and glare. Outdoor awnings are an excellent external blind to expand your use of your outdoors. They are ideal to reduce sun glare and can reflect up to 70% of heat to keep your home cooler. Outdoor awnings are very versatile, cost effective and easy to clean.
What Types of Outdoor Awnings are Available?
1. Folding Arm Awnings – are a flexible outdoor awning which can attach to an external wall of your home, or stand alone independently through strong supports. They are ideal to expand your outdoor space or provide shade across your windows, your seating area, patio, balcony, pool or bbq area. A wide range of quality fabrics and colours are available and we can also customise them to suit your space and individual style.
2. Retractable Awnings – are a flexible fabric tension system that is perfectly suited for conservatory situations, as well as pergola areas. Retractable awnings are made from our high grade aluminium and stainless steel parts allowing the whole unit to be powder coated with a wide variety of colours. They’re a great option because they offer versatility for your windows, doors, decks and patios.
3. Motorised Awnings – use an electric mechanism to roll the awning and can be operated by remote control, button or even a motion trigger. While motorised options are more expensive, they can save you time and money in the long run and can last longer than their stationary counterparts, because you can store them during bad weather, so they sustain less damage.
4. Sensor Triggered Awnings – take it one step further. They can be programmed to extend when the sun shines, or when the rain starts to fall. They can also automatically roll back up when it gets windy.
5. Window Awnings – are attractive and energy-efficient. When installed on windows they reduce the internal temperature of your home and also reduce your cooling energy bills. Window awnings are available in total sun block out or semi-see through fabrics and can be operated from inside or outside.
6. Portable Awnings – are a free standing awning that can be moved around your outdoor area to provide you with shade depending on where the sun is shining. Portable awnings provide better protection than a shade umbrella and are very convenient. The only downside is they are not secured to anything which means in harsh weather they can blow over and be damaged.
