How do I choose awnings for my house?

retractable awnings ballarat

If you love to entertain, or just want to make use of your beautiful outdoor area, then outdoor awnings are a wonderful solution. We make and sell a huge variety of outdoor awnings for a range of spaces allowing you to use your backyard all year round.

So which awning do I get? We have so many quality choices that it can be quite confusing which is the right awning to choose, but our friendly team will be there every step of the way to make it easier. We will help you with the size of the outdoor area you want to use and help you select the right style, material and colours to suit your individual taste.

What are outdoor awnings?

An awning is a covering commonly made of fabric or aluminum that extends over an outdoor area to provide extra space. Awnings provide shade and protection from the weather and allow you to enjoy the outdoors all year-round. Awnings turn your patio or deck into a more viable space for your family and visitors to all enjoy. Awnings can also reflect up to 70% of heat, so they are energy efficient and a great investment.

So what do I need to consider when choosing an awning?

There a number of factors to consider when choosing an awning, the following are a great start;

1. Space – One of the first things to consider when planning your outdoor area is the size of the outdoor space that you would like an awning/s for. This will determine what type of awning you need and if you need a customised awning that is designed and made specifically for you. Awnings can be attached to the exterior of your home for expanding your backyard, or attached to your windows and doors to protect the inside of your home and keep it cooler in summer and warmer in winter.

2. Budget/Features – Our awnings come in a range of features and we can help discuss your options based on your budget and your requirements. We have “ready made” awnings which are more affordable than our customised awnings. Our motorised awnings are also more expensive then our manual awnings and depending on the awning size, pattern design and fabric choice you need, also varies the price for you.

3. Spoilt for Choice – Our outdoor awnings come in a huge array of patterns and styles. We can also custom make a particular design for you. We also have a range of awning materials including polyester, cotton, canvas, mesh and aluminium. You can purchase fabrics in a wide assortment of colors to match your style. You can use fabric awnings for retractable awnings and all the features associated with them. Whereas aluminium and acrylic awnings have less colour choices and will not work as well with retractable awnings.

We hope this information has helped you with your awning choices. Our friendly staff have the knowledge and experience to support you throughout the process. We offer a free measure and quote service so you can be reassured you’re getting the right awning size. You can also view styles, fabrics and patterns at our Ballarat Showroom.

How roller blinds can enhance your view

Ballarat Duel Roller Blind

If you’re looking to make improvements to your home or office, or choose an affordable and stylish window covering, roller blinds are the ideal choice. Davidson’s Roller Blinds are one of our most popular sellers due to their heavy duty fabrics and huge choice of colours, styles and patterns. Roller blinds have many benefits and are perfect when you want privacy and to maintain your beautiful view.

What are Roller Blinds?

Roller Blinds are an internal window furnishing mounted either above or inside your window frame. You can roll them down for full privacy, or roll them back up to enjoy the sunlight and view. The simplicity and easy operation of roller blinds has made this style a traditional favourite in Australian homes.

What are the benefits of Roller Blinds?

  1. Light Control – whether you want complete darkness or some light, you can control the light entering the room at the touch of your fingertips, by rolling the blind up/down to your desired height.
  2. Versatile – roller blinds are available in a wide choice of fabric styles, colours and patterns. You can also choose a full block out material, translucent material (light filtering), or a sunscreen style fabric, depending on how dark or light you want the room.
  3. Privacy – roller blinds are an excellent way to maintain privacy. Roller blinds are available as a dual set up, so you can have a sunscreen roller blind with a full block out blind on the same bracket.
  4. Custom Made – if your window is not a standard size or shape, then we can custom make interior roller blinds to suit what you need.
  5. Easy to Clean – our blinds are made of quality fabrics and can easily be cleaned with a damp sponge. You can also use low settings to vacuum them, but please ask us more about our cleaning tips.
  6. Warmth/Coolness – our roller blinds are excellent energy savers, Over 30% of unwanted heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer takes place through windows. Davidson’s Roller Blinds have great insulation properties and help you create a safe and comfortable environment where glare and temperature can be controlled.
  7. Durability – our Australian Made fabrics and roller blind brackets are extremely high quality and durable, we also provide a 4 year written warranty and comply with child safety laws.

How can Roller Blinds enhance your view?

Unlike curtains which completely block out the view, roller blinds can be rolled up or down depending on how much light, privacy and view you would like to see. Roller blinds come in three main styles which provide light control, but also allow you to see outdoors;

  • Light Filtering Blinds – also called “Translucent Roller Blinds” are made of a tightly woven material which means they provide a great level of privacy, while still allowing filtered light to enter your room. Light filtering blinds provide day time privacy and light control by not allowing people to see through them. Light filtering blinds are great for use in living rooms, offices and kitchens and are available in our UPF Rating 50+ which reduces the amount of harmful ultraviolet light entering the room.
  • Sunscreen Blinds – Our sunscreen blinds are made from a specially designed mesh fabric which lets in plenty of light, while protecting you from the sun’s rays. Sunscreen blinds block out up to 95% of the sun’s harmful rays, creating energy efficiency. Sunscreen blinds provide a great level of privacy as you can’t see into the room from outside, although they are not a block out fabric, meaning you can still see through them and maintain your outside view. Sunscreen blinds help emphasise great outdoor views and you can use your blinds to beautifully frame a scenic view while protecting your privacy at the same time.
  • Dual Blinds – also known as “Day/Night Blinds” or “Double Roller Blinds” are a fantastic solution for providing differing light control and privacy. Dual roller blinds provide the benefits of two roller blinds on the same mechanism. One roller blind can be a total block out fabric, which means the room can be in complete darkness when closed, while the second roller blind can be your fabric choice such as a sunscreen blind or light filtering blind, meaning you can roll it up or down to allow more light to enter the room. Although dual roller blinds are on the same mechanism, they can be operated independently and each have their own chain, so depending on the weather outside you can adjust it for more brightness and for the view to be maintained.

What are the different types of awnings for your home

Awnings for your home, what types are there?

Now that we are experiencing warmer weather, it’s a great time to think about how you can cool your home to reduce your energy bills. Outdoor blinds are a wonderful way to keep out the sun’s harsh rays, while also expanding your outdoor area, providing excellent shade and privacy and also protecting your home and furnishings from fading in the sun.

Our customers are so fortunate to have a wide range of beautiful outdoor blinds to choose from and one of our most popular styles are outdoor awnings. Our range of awnings not only add value to your home, but they allow your outdoor area to be used all year round and keep you, your family and friends nice and comfortable.

With so much choice it’s hard to know which awning to choose based on your budget and style, so let us explain about awnings in further detail.

What are Outdoor Awnings?

An outdoor awning is a roof-like shelter installed on a home’s exterior that shades windows and your home from the sun’s heat and glare. Outdoor awnings are an excellent external blind to expand your use of your outdoors. They are ideal to reduce sun glare and can reflect up to 70% of heat to keep your home cooler. Outdoor awnings are very versatile, cost effective and easy to clean.

Retractable Awning
Folding Arm Awning
Folding Arm Awning
What Types of Outdoor Awnings are Available?

1. Folding Arm Awnings – are a flexible outdoor awning which can attach to an external wall of your home, or stand alone independently through strong supports. They are ideal to expand your outdoor space or provide shade across your windows, your seating area, patio, balcony, pool or bbq area. A wide range of quality fabrics and colours are available and we can also customise them to suit your space and individual style.

2. Retractable Awnings – are a flexible fabric tension system that is perfectly suited for conservatory situations, as well as pergola areas. Retractable awnings are made from our high grade aluminium and stainless steel parts allowing the whole unit to be powder coated with a wide variety of colours. They’re a great option because they offer versatility for your windows, doors, decks and patios.

3. Motorised Awnings – use an electric mechanism to roll the awning and can be operated by remote control, button or even a motion trigger. While motorised options are more expensive, they can save you time and money in the long run and can last longer than their stationary counterparts, because you can store them during bad weather, so they sustain less damage.

4. Sensor Triggered Awnings – take it one step further. They can be programmed to extend when the sun shines, or when the rain starts to fall. They can also automatically roll back up when it gets windy.

5. Window Awnings – are attractive and energy-efficient. When installed on windows they reduce the internal temperature of your home and also reduce your cooling energy bills. Window awnings are available in total sun block out or semi-see through fabrics and can be operated from inside or outside.

6. Portable Awnings – are a free standing awning that can be moved around your outdoor area to provide you with shade depending on where the sun is shining. Portable awnings provide better protection than a shade umbrella and are very convenient. The only downside is they are not secured to anything which means in harsh weather they can blow over and be damaged.

Do outdoor blinds reduce heat?

Outdoor Sun Blinds Ballarat

Keep you home cooler with external blinds.

Outdoor Blinds Ballarat

Summer in Australia has almost arrived which means our home and offices start heating up making the indoor environment a lot less comfortable on scorching days. Although air conditioning is one way to cool things down, using it regularly increases your energy bills. A more long term cost effective solution is to install outdoor blinds and shutters which reduce heat inside, while also providing many other benefits such as providing shade and maximising your outdoor space.

What are the Benefits of Outdoor Blinds?
  • Outdoor blinds and shutters help keep your house and office cooler and reduce your bills. The Department of Energy says “Window coverings can reduce heat gain by up to 77 percent and as a bonus can also reduce heat loss in the winter”. Using light coloured outdoor blind fabrics instead of dark colours, also helps reduce heat and sunlight. Lighter colours such as white, beige and creams help prevent absorption of heat and reflect light and glare.
  • Outdoor blinds and shutters increase privacy which is ideal for private meetings, or to stop strangers or close neighbours seeing what you’re doing. You can also choose between partial or full sun block out blinds, so you can still allow natural light into your room while maintaining privacy.
  •  When exterior blinds are used effectively they reduce your exposure to UV radiation, keeping your indoor area cooler and your outdoor area shaded. Outdoor blinds also ensure that light-sensitive and expensive furniture and items in your home or office help stay protected from discolouration due to sun exposure.
  • Outdoor blinds and shutters reduce exposure from the harsh elements including sunlight, dust, rain, wind and insects. They also help reduce noise from the outside world and allow you to use your outdoor space all year round.
  • Davidson’s outdoor blinds and shutters come in a wide range of fabrics, colours ands styles. They can be custom made to suit your space and offer manual or motorised control for easy use. Our home automation options include timers and sun sensors, which means you can program your outdoor blinds to intelligently react to the weather, or open and close at certain times of day.
The Davidson’s Range of Outdoor Blinds and Shutters
  1. Outdoor Patio Blinds – If you love spending time outdoors then Patio Blinds are a great solution to extend your outdoor area, pergola, verandah, balcony, BBQ area and outdoor seating.
  2. Exterior Sun Blinds – are designed to reduce glare and maximise protection against damaging UV rays. They are available in full block out, or semi-see through if you want to maintain your outdoor view.
  3. Outdoor Roller Shutters – Our external shutters are available in our premium aluminium range with four great options to choose including fixed panel, hinged, sliding and bi-fold. Roller Shutters provide fantastic home or office security, while also increasing privacy, providing thermal protection and reducing outside noise.
  4. Outdoor Awnings – An awning is a roof-like shelter installed on a home’s exterior that shades windows from the sun’s heat and glare. Outdoor Folding Arm Awnings are ideal for unique shaped windows or hard to access places. Retractable Awnings are a more flexible fabric tension system, ideal for conservatory situations, as well as pergolas. Window awnings can reduce solar heat gain in the summer by up to 65% on south-facing windows and 77% on west-facing windows.
  5. External Shutters – Our External Shutters louvres retain the breeze and natural light while increasing the level of privacy and weather protection. They also are durable for all conditions and have key locks and flush bolts available for added security.

Why Internal Blinds are the best way to keep your home cooler in summer

Keep you home cooler with internal blinds.

Now that the warmer weather is arriving it’s so important to keep your home nice and cool. With the cost of living increasing and therefore your utility costs getting higher, any time you don’t have to use your air conditioner means you reduce your electricity bill and these savings are a huge benefit.

By having our team professionally install internal blinds is an effective way to save money and makes your indoor space a lot more comfortable. Let us explain in more detail why internal blinds are the best way to keep your home cooler in summer.

The Benefits of Internal Blinds

The Australian Government states that “up to 40% of a home’s heating energy can be lost and up to 87% of its heat gained through windows”. Window coverings such as Internal Blinds helps keep out this heat by providing comfort, regulating temperatures, and lowering energy bills. Indoor blinds can add an aesthetic appearance to your home, but they also have many other benefits. Our following three blinds look great and also have fantastic cooling properties;

Roller Blinds – help energy consumption as when they are closed they provide full window coverage. Roller blinds are available in a total sun block out fabric, or a light filtering option. They can also be used in a double roller blind set up (dual) to include a sunscreen and block out roller onto the one bracket for further privacy and insulation.

Honeycomb Cellular Blinds – also known as Honeycomb Shades or Cellular Shades, use sheer, semi-opaque and woven fabrics to darken rooms. These fabrics are made in d-cell shapes which capture a layer of air inside their cellular construction, allowing them to help regulate temperature, making it a great cost-effective option.

Roman Blinds – are available in a range of fabric colours, patterns and textures. When lowered their heavier fabrics will offer better insulation properties and thermal performance. Total sun block out allows your room to keep a lot cooler on warmer days.

Protective Factors

We know the sun’s ultra violet (UV) rays can be damaging to your skin, but they are also very damaging to your furnishings, paintwork and flooring. Internal blinds keep out the light and protect your furnishings from damage, fading and general wear and tear, saving you time and money in caring for all parts of your home.

Fabric is Important

Block Out Internal Blinds – also called “Black Out Blinds” are one of our most popular blinds. Block out blinds are made of a 100% block out fabric and completely block out the amount of light entering the room. Due to having zero light transmission and therefore lower the temperature in your room by reflecting heat and reducing sun glare.

Sunscreen Internal Blinds – are made from a specially designed mesh fabric which lets in plenty of light, while protecting you from the sun’s rays. Sunscreen blinds block out up to 95% of the sun’s harmful rays, creating energy efficiency. Sunscreen blinds provide a great level of privacy as you can’t see into the room from outside, although they are not a block out fabric, meaning you can still see through them and maintain your outside view.

Light Filtering Internal Blinds – are available in our UPF Rating 50+ which reduces the amount of harmful ultraviolet light entering the room and also come in a range of styles including plain, textured or coloured fabrics.

Which indoor blinds are best for privacy and light?

automated blinds

So you have made a decision to install indoor blinds in your home or office, but it can be difficult to know which style or features you need to suit your different rooms. The internal blinds suitable for your bedroom or bathrooms are very different to the blinds you can choose for your lounge room or meeting room. In the bedroom and bathroom your focus is on privacy and darkness, whereas in other rooms you will need a lot more light. Let us explain which indoor blinds are best for privacy and for light control.

Block Out Blinds – also called “Black Out Blinds” are one of our most popular blinds. Block out blinds are made of a 100% block out fabric and completely block out the amount of light entering the room. Due to having zero light transmission, block out blinds make the room darker meaning they are perfect for bedrooms, bathrooms, TV and movie rooms. Block out blinds also improve the temperature in your room by keeping in the warmth during colder days and in hot weather they reflect heat and reduce sun glare in your room, making your home and office cooler. Block out blinds also have the benefits of maintaining your privacy as people can not see through them when they’re closed. Available in a range of colours and fabrics means they will match any of your decor.

Dual Blinds – also known as “Day/Night Blinds” or “Double Roller Blinds” are a fantastic solution for providing differing light control and privacy. Dual roller blinds provide the benefits of two roller blinds on the same mechanism. One roller blind can be a total block out fabric as mentioned above, which means the room can be in complete darkness when closed, while the second roller blind can be your fabric choice such as a sunscreen blind or light filtering blind, meaning you can roll it up or down to allow more light to enter the room. Although dual roller blinds are on the same mechanism, they can be operated independently and each have their own chain, so depending on the weather outside you can adjust it for more brightness and allow the sunshine to enter, or close it for more privacy and shade. Dual roller blinds can be cord operated, or we also have a motorised option available.

Light Filtering Blinds – also called “Translucent Roller Blinds” are made of a tightly woven material which means they provide a great level of privacy, while still allowing filtered light to enter your room. Light filtering blinds provide a great level of day time privacy and light control by not allowing people to see through them. Light filtering blinds are great for use in living rooms, offices and kitchens, but they are not a total block out, so they are not ideal in bathrooms or bedrooms as you can see silhouettes through them at night when the lights are on. Light filtering blinds are available in our UPF Rating 50+ which reduces the amount of harmful ultraviolet light entering the room and also come in a range of styles including plain, textured or coloured fabrics.

Sunscreen Blinds – Our sunscreen blinds are made from a specially designed mesh fabric which lets in plenty of light, while protecting you from the sun’s rays. Sunscreen blinds block out up to 95% of the sun’s harmful rays, creating energy efficiency. Sunscreen blinds provide a great level of privacy as you can’t see into the room from outside, although they are not a block out fabric, meaning you can still see through them and maintain your outside view. Sunscreen blinds do not provide privacy at night when the lights are on, so like light filtering blinds they are not ideal for bedrooms or bathrooms.

Are security screens effective?

federation security Doors

When you purchase your dream home or commercial property, you want to make certain it is maintained and protected. Investing in security screens protects not only your property, but also protects your family and customers. Before purchasing security screens for your windows or doors, it’s important to know the qualities of your investment, so let us explain why security screens are effective.

What are Security Screens?

Security screens are durable high quality mesh screens that can be custom made to fit over your windows and doors to provide a deterrent against intruders. Security screens offer all the benefits of safety screens, but they also improve the security of your home and business, while maintaining your privacy and views.

What are the Main Benefits of Security Screens?

  1. Quality – We provide premium quality Australian owned Invisi-Gard Security Screens which are made of 316 Marine Grade Stainless Steel. The mesh screen quality provides the ultimate protection for your family, your staff and your clients, while also exceeding all relevant Australian and Industry Standards.
  2. Protection – Our security screens are designed first and foremost to protect you from would-be intruders. Our screen quality has been professionally tested against heavy impact from kicks or tools such as hammers and knives without any major damage. They also have additional lock features for extra added security.
  3. Durable – Due to window security screens being exposed to the harsh elements of wind, rain and sun, the design of the screen and the mesh have been constructed to prevent rust and corrosion, therefore they won’t compromise your safety or your family’s safety. Invisi-Gard security screens are also bush fire rated and protects your property from floating embers and reduces heat intensity of radiant heat flux.
  4. Bug Protection – We all love to entertain in summer, but flies and mosquitoes can be unwanted guests. Window security screens and security doors can allow your home or office to be protected from these flying pests, while still enhancing natural ventilation by allowing fresh air to continually enter the room.
  5. Privacy -The high quality thickness of the mesh of our security screens provides you with added privacy, by stopping strangers from peering through your windows and doors, but still maintaining your view.
  6. Energy Efficiency – Security screens keep your home and office cooler in summer. By professionally fitting Invisi-Gard security screens over the outside of your window “can improve the energy efficiency of your window by up to 51%” (visit Invis-Gard website for more information). The ability to naturally cool your room by allowing air to flow, also helps reduce your energy expenses.
  7. Safety – The Fall Protection window screen option has been tried and tested to prevent accidental falls from windows. The big advantage of fall prevention screens is that they comply with the “National Construction Code for the Protection of Openable Windows”. This means that once screens are professionally installed, these windows can then be opened fully, while the screen still keeps children and pets safe.
  8. Maintenance – Our security screens require minor maintenance. Simply washing the product with a mild detergent and then rinsing off the soap residue from time to time will keep the product looking fantastic for many years. We will also provide you with care and maintenance information with your purchase.

We are an authorised Invisi-Gard supplier and provide security screens for both residential and commercial properties. Please contact our team to arrange a free measure and quote, or to talk to us about the best security screen products for you.

If you have a contemporary home and enjoy bright colours, then you may like an eye catching single colour blind, or if you are looking to make even more of a statement, then you may choose fabrics with a pattern or texture, such as stripes or floral prints.

Light/Privacy

Depending on the room/atmosphere you’re wanting, you may want more or less light and privacy and we have 3 main styles to suit. Blockout blinds means the fabric completely blocks out the amount of light entering the room. Light Filtering blinds also known as Translucent Blinds, provides a soft filtering light to enter the room. You can’t see out of them and you can’t see through them if you’re outside. Sunscreen blinds block out up to 95% of the sun’s rays. They are great for privacy as you can see out of them, but can not see through them if you’re outside.
